5 REASONS TO... ADD MORE PULSES TO YOUR DIET
BBC1, 7.30pm
1. Pulses include beans, lentils and chickpeas and contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre helps manage your weight, blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol. Insoluble fibre helps with digestion and keeping you regular.
2. They’re rich in protein, which helps rebuild muscle and strengthens your hair, nails and skin.
3. Pulses are a source of iron, which is essential to avoid anaemia.
4. They are also high in minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium – all vital for good health.
5. Pulses contain antioxidants that may help lower cancer risks.
When Daisy’s owners were told the Jack Russell cross had just weeks to live after contracting suspected coronavirus, they thought the holiday they had booked to the Alps would be their last chance to enjoy some quality time together. But the fresh mountain air turned out to be just what Daisy needed and she made a miraculous recovery.
Her owner Pete Murden, from Exeter, said: “Daisy had constant coughing, loss of smell and taste, loss of appetite and a raging temperature, all symptoms of Covid-19.
“She went from being a healthy, active bundle of fun to a lethargic, poorly dog in a few hours. She used to run and play for hours and follow us everywhere, then within 24 hours she hardly had the strength to walk.”
Fortunately Daisy has made a full recovery and is able to continue working as a diabetic detection dog for Pete.
