1909: Swedish runner Thure Johanson set a marathon record of two hours, 40 minutes, 34.2 seconds in Stockholm.
1968: Sir Garfield Sobers made cricketing history when he hit six sixes in one over for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan off Malcolm Nash at Swansea.
1969: Former world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano died in a plane crash. He would have been 46 a day later.
1972: Finnish great Lasse Viren ran an Olympic and world record 27.38.4 for the 10,000 metres in Munich.
1972: Also at the Munich Olympics, American swimmer Mark Spitz completed a butterfly double, winning the 100m in a world record 54.27 seconds, having already won the 200m.
1987: Baseball’s “Great Potato Incident. Williamsport Bills’ Dave Bresnahan used a potato carved to look like a baseball to attempt to lure an opposing baserunner off third base. He was caught, fined $50 and released from the team.
1991: Former Tottenham defender Cyril Knowles died after a long illness at the age of 47. He played 401 games for his club and won four England caps.
2004: Manchester United completed the £27m signing of England striker Wayne Rooney from Everton.
2016: David Luiz rejoined Chelsea from Paris St Germain in a £32m deal on a frantic transfer deadline day.
2017: Surrey’s County Championship match against Middlesex at The Oval was abandoned as a draw after a crossbow bolt landed on the square.
2019: French driver Anthoine Hubert died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash during the Formula 2 Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. He was 22.
