A CLIMBER was badly injured falling down a cliff in the Peak District.

The man had been scaling rocks at Millstone Edge, in Hope Valley, on Monday afternoon, when he fell 10 metres to the ground.

Emergency services were called to the incident after the climber received injuries to both ankles after landing very heavily on his feet.

The mountain rescue team was called to help transport the casualty to a nearby road where they were moved into a waiting ambulance.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team, which is made up of volunteers and runs on donations, says it was called to the scene at around 12.45pm by Derbyshire police.

A spokesperson for the team said they had just finished responding to an incident near Castleton in which a walker had fallen on the slopes of Hollins Cross, when they received the call.

“Just as we were repacking the vehicles at the roadside from incident 104, we were contacted by Derbyshire Constabulary to assist a fallen climber at Millstone Edge,” they said.

“The climber had taken a 10 metre lead fall, landing on their feet very heavily, sustaining ankle injuries to both legs. Team members were rapidly on scene, including a team doctor.

“The patient was given pain relief and their painful injuries splinted before loading on a mountain rescue stretcher for the carry back to the road and the waiting EMAS ambulance.

“Thank you to the patience of the drivers at incident 105 while we temporarily closed the road for safe passage of the patient to the ambulance.”
