LIVE lunchtime pop music returns to a Derby park for the first time in six years this weekend after an appeal to the city council.

The events, last held on the terrace in front of the cafe at Darley Park in 2015, were banned after a local resident complained.

The park has long staged classical concerts accompanied by fireworks well into the evening, and now a free lunchtime concert, featuring a comeback gig by local seven-piece 1960s pop and soul group Godfrey’s Grit ’n’ Soul Band, has been given the current council’s blessing to perform there on Sunday to raise money for charity.

Darley ward councillor Alan Grimadell said: “The terrace is a perfect venue to provide entertainment to the people of Darley and further afield.

“Along with David Pearson, who had been actively involved with similar events in previous years, and the band’s bass player, Roger Smith, I’m delighted to have helped to instigate the project.

“Free concerts on the terrace are something we should all enjoy. Godfrey’s Grit ’n’ Soul Band are a class act, and together with support acts, we have something for everyone.

“It will encourage new visitors to the park, and it will raise money for the Derbyshire Children’s Holiday

The concert will also be a comeback gig for Godfrey’s Grit ’n’ Soul Band. Roger Smith said: “Due to Covid-19, we have been unable to perform in public for nearly two years and so, on Sunday, we’ll be introducing a new lead singer, Alan Biddle, who fronted Pepper’s Machine, one of our rival groups back in the 60s.”

The event, which will start at noon and end around 3pm, is expected to attract a large crowd, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own seats if possible.

Support acts include saxophonist Dave Cousins and guitar duo Steve Foulkes and Mick Asprey.
