DUFFIELD’S scarecrow trail – cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic – returns to the village this week with surprises promised for everyone.

From Wednesday, 55 scarecrows will be displayed across Duffield, every one made locally by individuals, families, community groups or businesses.

Lisa Leach, one of the team responsible for organising the trail, said: “We’re not giving anything away at this stage, but there’s going to be a fantastic range of inspirational figures, some personally inspirational to those making the scarecrows, some national heroes that you’ll immediately recognise – and a few scarecrows that might surprise you.

“We made the difficult decision to cancel the event in 2020, but, now that Covid restrictions are easing, we felt it was important that this year’s trail should go ahead.

“We thought that having ‘inspiration’ as this year’s theme would make the trail a really positive and uplifting experience for everyone visiting Duffield.

“It’s been a very strange – and, for some, very difficult – 18 months, and the Scarecrow Trail aims to help put a smile on everyone’s face.”

The trail will run from this Wednesday to Sunday, September 26. Maps – sales of which will raise money for charities – showing the locations of all the scarecrows, as well as details of pop-up refreshment stops at weekends, are available from local outlets. Details of where to buy the maps, together with more information, is available on the Duffield Arts Festival Facebook page and on the website www.duffieldartsfestival.com
