Couple ‘lucky to be alive’ after car wrecks kitchen

-

A COUPLE say they feel “lucky to be alive” after a car smashed into their house, leading to concerns that it may have ruptured a gas pipe.

Arleston Lane, in Stenson Fields, was closed after a Range Rover ploughed into the side of a property, destroying the kitchen.

The homeowners, Mr and Mrs Moore, said it sounded like a “bomb had exploded”.

In the incident on Sunday afternoon the Range Rover hit a Jaguar car before mounting the pavement, careering through a neighbouring front garden and crashing through the Moores’ kitchen.

Derbyshire police released a statement saying: “Arleston Road in Stenson Fields is currently closed (4.30pm, September 12) after a car collided with a house.

“Officers are on scene, along with colleagues from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, and the road may be closed for some time.

“There are not believed to be any serious injuries at this time, however, the car may have damaged a gas main and a cordon is in place.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area and drivers should find alternative routes.”

Arleston Lane was eventually reopened at 7.20pm after police and emergency services dealt with the collision, and fire crews had made the scene safe following the concerns about a gas leak.

The couple described being “absolutely shocked” when the car crashed into their home and said they were “lucky to get out alive”.

They had made cup of tea and had just left he kitchen when the crash happened. “It sounded like a bomb had gone off ,” said Mr Moore. “A Range Rover crashed through the house and it has destroyed the whole kitchen.”

He added: “We’ve now got no gas, no electricity, and we need to get some clothes out the house.

“We’re very, very lucky.”
