Single stab wound killed Byron, 22

-

A MAN died of a “stab wound to the chest”, an inquest heard.

Byron Dion Griffin was found with a wound to the chest on July 4, in Eyre’s Garden, Ilkeston. The 22-year-old, from East Leake, died of his injuries the following day at 1.25pm, the inquest was told.

A post-mortem examination conducted by Professor Guy Rutty on July 9 identified that the cause of death was a “stab wound to the chest”.

Peter Nieto, area coroner for Derby and Derbyshire, adjourned the inquest until January 4, 2022.

Mr Nieto said: “Four people have been charged in relation to Mr Griffin’s death with a provisional trial date of January 4, 2022, so I’ve adjourned the inquest pending the outcome of the criminal trials.

“Mr Griffin was 22 when he died. He had been found on a street in Ilkeston with an apparent chest stab wound on July 4, 2021, and received emergency treatment at the scene. He was taken to the

Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment and further resuscitation attempts but he died later that afternoon.”

Three of the four men charged with the murder of Mr Griffin have denied killing the 22-year-old.

Dylan Geary, 21, Daniel Lewsley, 32, Grant James Masterson, 29, all of Ilkeston, appeared at Derby Crown Court on Friday, September 10.

The fourth man charged with murder has yet to submit his plea.

Following his death, Mr Griffin’s mother, Zoe Cooke, said: “Byron’s death has absolutely devastated my family. He is my only son and leaves behind three sisters aged 10, 11 and 27 who will never, ever get over this.

“Byron was loved by so many – to the point that one of his old teachers came to see me to pay his condolences despite him leaving school years ago.

“Byron was my absolute heartbeat and our lives will never be the same again - the pain is absolutely unbearable. We are all devastated beyond belief and I wouldn’t wish this on any parent.”
