Mission to move movie train proves impossible

-

JUST a few weeks ago it was hanging off the edge of a quarry near Stoney Middleton, but it appears the carriage used in the latest Mission Impossible film didn’t want to leave Derbyshire.

Pictures from the Hornsbridge roundabout in Chesterfield showed the carriage had collided with the railway bridge, which takes passenger trains in and out of Chesterfield station.

As a result of the collision traffic around the roundabout was brought to a standstill at the start of the evening rush hour yesterday.

The carriage is believed to have been making its way from the set of the Mission Impossible 7 film at Dalton Quarry near Stoney Middleton, where it had been dangled off the edge of the cliff and dropped to the quarry floor almost two weeks ago.

It had been led under the bridge by a police escort.

Sara Whyman took the picture of the crash and commented on her social media account: “I just heard a crash, looked at the side of me and bam, bloke from recovery van came running down.” Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, who stars in the Mission Impossible franchise, has made a number of trips to North Derbyshire while filming has been taking place. Back in August, the production company drove a locomotive off the edge of the cliff, crashing it into the quarry floor in one of the spectacular stunts due to be included in the film itself.

The blue carriage, which had become stuck under the railway bridge in Chesterfield, clearly shows signs of damage following its trip to the quarry bottom with the roof bent and dented and the side pushed into where passengers would normally be sitting.
