Police are casting their eyes skyward after a youths have taken to gathering on roofs in Swadlincote

SWADLINCOTE’S police have started patrolling the town’s rooftops.

Officers are now regularly heading onto the roofs of shops in the town centre due to a worrying trend of groups of people gathering on them.

They say there are safety concerns and “a large amount of litter” being left by youths.

Parents are being challenged to make sure they know where their teenagers are amid complaints of “anti-social behaviour”.

A Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team spokesman said: “Patrols are regularly being conducted on the rooftops of the shops on the High Street in Swadlincote.

“It appears a group of teens have made this their new spot to hang out. Not only are rooftops highly dangerous.

“There is also a large amount of litter being left behind

“Preventative measures are being put in place with the owners of the properties.

“This anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in our town – do you know where your teenagers are going?”

The news comes after cheeky youths were spotted dangerously clambering up scaffolding in Swadlincote and told police they wanted to be builders when they were caught.

The youngsters had got over the fencing on the new housing development at Cadley Village and were caught by police on the scaffolding on Tuesday.

When questioned by the police officers, one of them replied that they wanted to be a builder so were getting experience on a building site.

They had climbed over a fence to get onto the site with police warning of the dangers, telling them the fence was there for a reason.

Officers from the Swadlincote Police Safer Neighbourhood Team shared a picture of the new housing estate with building work clearly being carried out on the site.

A spokesman for the unit, which is an arm of Derbyshire police, said: “The Safer Neighbourhood Team was called to Cadley Village as youths were climbing on the scaffolding.

“One of them said they were there because they wanted to be a builder and get experience on a new build site. Details taken and we will be monitoring. The fencing is there for a reason.”
