AN educational psychologist died from injuries sustained to his pelvis when struck by an unmarked police car, an inquest heard.

James Bane, 50, died from his injuries at the scene following the collision between an unmarked police vehicle and two parked cars on September 28.

At an inquest opened yesterday at Derby Coroner’s Court by Peter Nieto, area coroner for Derby and Derbyshire, Mr Bane was found to have died from a pelvic injury.

Mr Nieto said: “The reason I’m opening an inquest today is because the information provided to me gives me reason to suspect that his death was not a natural causes death.”

Mr Bane, who was walking in

Egginton Road, Etwall, received his injuries after an unmarked police car collided with two unattended parked cars.

A 34-year-old female pedestrian was also injured in the crash.

Mr Nieto said: “Derbyshire police were made aware of a three-vehicle road traffic collision which occurred on Egginton Road in Etwall.

“James Bane was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident involved an unmarked police vehicle which was being driven by an onduty Derbyshire police officer along Egginton Road.

“It collided with an unattended stationary car, and then continued travelling and then collided with Mr Bane, trapping him between the police vehicle and his own vehicle, sadly causing what proved to be fatal injuries.”

Derbyshire police have confirmed that a serving police officer has been suspended from duties while investigations into the crash continue.

In a statement from the coroner’s office by Pauline Asker, the results of the post-mortem examination showed the extent of Mr Bane’s injuries following the collision.

It said: “A standard forensics postmortem examination was carried out on 1 October, 2021 by Professor Guy Rutty, who has given the cause of death as pelvic injury sustained in a road traffic incident.”

Mr Bane, of Nottingham, who worked as an educational psychologist, died at the scene.

Coroner Peter Nieto adjourned the inquest until further criminal investigations following the crash have been completed.
