1891: In the last British Open golf tournament contested over 36 holes in a single day, Hugh Kirkaldy won by two strokes from his brother Andrew.
1973: Racing driver Jackie Stewart did not contest the last race of the season, the US Grand Prix, but had already sealed his third F1 World Championship.
1993: Liam Brady resigned as manager of Celtic. His assistant Joe Jordan was put in temporary charge and Lou Macari was later named the new boss.
1996: Steve Coppell was confirmed as manager of First Division Manchester City, ending the club’s six-week search for a successor to Alan Ball. Coppell lasted only 33 days before quitting.
2000: Kevin Keegan resigned as England coach after the 1-0 defeat by Germany in the final match to be played at the old Wembley Stadium.
2003: Rio Ferdinand was omitted from the England squad to face Turkey in their crucial Euro 2004 qualifier after failing to attend a drugs test.
2009: Avram Grant was appointed as the new director of football for Portsmouth. He went on to become manager but could not save the club from relegation.
2010: England swimmer Rebecca Adlington won gold in the women’s 800m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games.
2012: The West Indies won the ICC World Twenty20 title, beating Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final in Colombo.
2014: Rugby union Premiership club Wasps were given the green light for a £30m takeover of Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, which was also the home of Coventry City.
2015: Bryan Habana equalled Jonah Lomu’s World Cup try-scoring record as he led South Africa into the quarterfinals with a crushing 64-0 victory over the United States.
