Tesco offering £1k HGV driver bonus as gaps appear on shop shelves
OTHER SUPERMARKETS IN THE AREA SEEM TO HAVE PLENTY OF STOCK
SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is offering a large bonus for HGV drivers who join the company in the run-up to Christmas.
Drivers who permanently join the company before November 30 will receive a £1,000 bonus if they stay with the business until March 11, 2022.
Tesco’s closest distribution centre to Derbyshire is in Hinckley in Leicestershire, which is hiring at the moment.
This comes as a Tesco in Derby appeared to have some empty shelves as the Derby Telegraph did the rounds of supermarket stock levels in the city.
The Tesco store, in St Peter’s Street, appeared to be low on fresh produce, such as fruit and vegetables.
Other supermarkets in the area showed little to no signs of shortages.
The Derby Telegraph checked the supermarket twice to make sure that the apparent empty shelves were not due to a stocktake.
Sainsbury’s, Iceland and Marks & Spencer in the city centre were also checked, all of which had full shelves at the time.
The Tesco store is one of the most popular supermarkets in the city centre and is often busy due to the area’s high footfall. It is one of seven branches of the supermarket chain in the city.
The Derby Telegraph contacted Tesco who said that although the HGV crisis has caused some challenges in distribution, availability was good across the country and deliveries are able to take place on a daily basis.
Concerns are mounting that the HGV driver shortage could lead to more empty shelves at British supermarkets on the run-up to Christmas.
New drivers with Tesco can expect a salary of £39,282 per year as well as earning up to £800 market supplement, which would be paid in January, and earn an extra £2 per hour on any overtime in December.
Workers also benefit from a 10% discount on Tesco purchases as well as 29 days’ paid holiday a year.
