Medics fought to save baby as ‘fit and well’ young woman suffered a fatal heart attack

BOY SURVIVED AFTER BEING DELIVERED VIA EMERGENCY OP

- By PETER HENNESSY AND MATTHEW LODGE

A DERBYSHIRE mum died while medics battled to save her and her unborn child.

Paige Bradbury-Price, from Long Eaton, had been pregnant with her second child when she went into a sudden cardiac arrest in the early hours of August 11 last year.

Ms Bradbury-Price, who was otherwise a “fit and well young woman”, had seemed well the night before on August 10.

An inquest at Nottingham Coroner’s Court was told that she had been a little “hot and stressed”, before her partner woke up to find her unresponsive early the next morning.

Medics from the air ambulance service and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the address, while another family member performed CPR.

The 22-year-old, who was 36 weeks pregnant, had been in cardiac arrest for at least 12 minutes before help arrived.

She was treated in the bedroom of the house, before being taken to Queen’s Medical Centre where she died later that morning.

Resuscitation efforts stopped at 2.58am and her time of death was given as 6.20am.

The decision was made to deliver her baby via a resuscitative hysterotomy at 1.57am while efforts continued to resuscitate Ms Bradbury-Price. This was a decision that assistant coroner Dr Elizabeth Didcock described as “the right thing to do”.

The baby responded well to resuscitation efforts and was taken home from the QMC shortly after being admitted. The inquest was told that a resuscitative hysterotomy was a “very rare” procedure.

Bosses from the air ambulance service noted that those involved in Ms Bradbury-Price’s care were likely “stressed and traumatised” as a result of the incident, which was described as “almost unprecedented”.

Dr Didcock concluded: “There are no issues of care that caused or contributed to Paige’s death. My conclusion is therefore that of natural causes. “Finally, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to all the family for the loss of Paige.” The coroner ruled that Ms BradburyPrice had died from natural causes and a medical cause of death was given as unascertained. One member of the family previously told the inquest: “Thank you for everything you did there. It was such an unusual and rare case. I know how much it affected us but I know it affected everybody there that night. “We lost Paige, but we have also gained a gorgeous little boy. “That is down to the people who were there that night who made that happen. We would just like to say thank you.”

We lost Paige, but we have also gained a gorgeous little boy.
