Shameless addict who exploited his elderly grandma for cash

HE REPEATEDLY BREACHED A RESTRAINING ORDER

A DRUG addict who constantly pestered his elderly grandmother for cash has been jailed for his shameless exploitation of the elderly woman.

Shaun Dean deliberately and cynically targeted his 87-year-old gran late at night, knowing she would hand over money to get rid of him.

And when faced with his atrocious behaviour in court, he told a judge “you don’t know nothing, mate” before storming out of the sentencing hearing.

Dean’s outburst saw him leave the video link booth at HMP Nottingham, where he has been since his last set of offences. His stroppy antics over the link meant he did not see how long he will spend in jail.

Jailing the 34-year-old for two-and-a-half years, Recorder Adrian Reynolds said: “The position in this case is brutally and tragically simple.

“Your craving for drugs drives you to pester your grandmother for money.

“You have been given numerous chances over the years and they have had no impact on your behaviour at all.

“You won’t address your drug problem and you make your grandmother’s life a misery.

“The only way to deal with this is keeping you inside where you are no threat to that poor old woman.”

At that stage Dean began smiling over the video link from HMP Ranby to which Recorder Reynolds asked: “Do you find this funny?”

The defendant replied: “You don’t know nothing, mate” before walking out of the room.

Stefan Fox, prosecuting, said Dean was initially handed a restraining order in May 2017 following convictions for theft and criminal damage.

He said in March 2019 that was extended indefinitely, meaning Dean was forbidden from going to his gran’s Derby address or contacting her.

Mr Fox said that has been breached on nine separate occasions up until this latest set of offending.

He said: “She is an 87-year-old who lives alone.

“He (Dean) constantly pesters her for money, he is very manipulative indeed and he’s done this ever since her husband – his grandfather – passed away eight years ago.

“He knows that eventually she will give in even after telling him ‘no.’

“He will attend her address late at night, just before she goes to sleep, knowing she will give him money to get rid of him.”

Mr Fox said over 19 days, in May of this year, Dean breached the order on 11 separate occasions.

He said: “In May she estimates that she gave him around £705.”

Mr Fox said Dean was arrested on May 24 and was taken to St Mary’s Wharf police station, in Chester Green. He said in a pocket, officers found a knife and a small quantity of heroin, but Dean refused to answer any questions which were put to him.

But he later pleaded guilty to 11 counts of breaching a restraining order, possession of the weapon and the drugs.

He has 19 previous convictions for 44 offences.

Hal Ewing, mitigating, said: “He is in his 30s now and realises he wishes to try and rehabilitate himself and put all this behind him when he is released.”

Recorder Reynolds said: “I wonder how many time has he said that in the past?”

Mr Ewing said: “Only time will tell but he tells me that’s his fixed desire and intention.”

You won’t address your drug problem and you make your grandmother’s life a misery.
