New NHS health centre for 1,000s of patients set to be built in city
A NEW super-health centre to cater for tens of thousands of NHS patients from Derby is planned to open in 2024.
The facility would be one of a number of proposed new supercentres in England that would cater for between 25,000 and 150,000 NHS patients in total.
The aim is for the centres to bring health and social care services together in one building as a form of one-stop shop.
Earlier this year it was reported that early plans had been drawn up for a new healthcare centre in Sinfin.
Already several local health organisations and charities have submitted interest in occupying the new building and it could also host a food bank.
Now it has been revealed that the building work in Sinfin could be completed in over two years’ time, with the hope of it opening in August 2024.
NHS Derby and Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has said in a report that it is in talks with a landowner about agreeing a value for land near the existing Sinfin Health Centre on Sinfin Lane, which it said was “too small”.
Should a value negotiation be successful, a planning application is expected to be submitted early next year.
The report by NHS Derby and Derbyshire CCG said: “The timeline for the project is being set nationally and is very tight for a development of this scale, with the business case due to be completed by May 2022 with the site open for business in August 2024.
“Clive Newman, director of GP Development at NHS Derby and Derbyshire CCG, is the project director for this piece of work with a programme board to oversee the project. The next key steps are for the CCG and the current owner to agree the value for the land so the first steps procurement steps can begin.
“And to agree the final design so planning permission can be applied for in early 2022.”
Sinfin and the area south of Derby are the focus of a significant number of housing developments, with increasing pressure on existing health services.
Residents and local representatives have been calling for new health services to help shoulder this growing burden for years, with the proposed Infinity Garden Village – between Sinfin and Chellaston – thought to provide the final required spur. The project is to be discussed further at an adults and health scrutiny meeting of Derby City Council.
