Street named after brave young soldier
A NEW street in Derbyshire has been named after a brave young soldier who lost his life serving in Northern Ireland.
Lance Corporal Steven Bagshaw who was from Tintwistle, was just 21 when he died.
Now to add to a plaque honouring his sacrifice at the Royal British Legion’s National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, a street on a new Barratt Homes development in his home town has been named after him
A number of Steven’s friends and family, including his sisters, Mary and Sylvia, attended an event at Willow Gardens to unveil the new street signs for LCPL Steven Bagshaw Avenue.
It was an occasion fit to commemorate Steven’s life, with Mary delivering a beautiful speech, several poppy wreaths and crosses being laid beneath his name, in addition to military personnel attending in full uniform with flags. The 22nd Cheshire Regiment Riders, who had raised money for Steven’s plaque to be placed in the Arboretum in 2020, were also present.
Mary said: “I would like to thank Derbyshire County Council and Barratt Homes for their understanding and compassion in regards to having a road named after our lovely brother.
“This road is so special to us; as a young lad, Steven used to fish in the river at the end of the road, so there are a lot of happy memories for us here.”
Neil Goodwin, Managing Director at Barratt Homes, said: “Being able to celebrate Lance Corporal Steven Bagshaw in this way and seeing such a magnificent attendance for the unveiling is truly an honour. “Having Steven’s family and friends, local dignitaries and military personnel all come together to remember him is a moment that will live long in the hearts of all who were there.” To support the commemoration of Steven and other soldiers, visit the National Memorial Arboretum at www.thenma.org.uk
