Food court outlet handed single star for its hygiene
ONE of Derbion’s food outlets has had to make major improvements after being given a one-star rating by food hygiene inspectors.
Pasta 4 U, in the second-floor food court, was visited by officers from Derby City Council on August 12, who found a host of problems.
The eatery was found to be storing gluten-free products with wheatbased bread rolls, greasy and dirty equipment and “no implementation of basic cleanliness”.
However, owner Darren said that changes had been made to rectify the problems outlined in the report, including staff changes.
He said: “Due to Covid we lost a lot of staff and we had to take on new staff, and they have since left. They weren’t performing as they should have been. All the recommendations were changed immediately and the new staff are working as they should.
“Obviously, we apologise to our customers. We try our best, but it was difficult due to Covid, people not coming work etc. But that’s no excuse. The changes have been implemented and as soon as we can, we are going to have a reinspection. The restaurant is now clean and there are no problems.”
The restaurant was busy when visited by our reporter and serves a range of pasta and pizza dishes, as well as hot and cold drinks.
During its inspection, it was judged to be generally satisfactory in terms of hygienic food handling, but required improvement over cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities and in need of major improvement over management of food safety.
The report, seen by the Derby Telegraph following a Freedom of
Information request, said: “At the time of my visit, open gluten-free pizza bases were being stored in contact with a wheat based product (bread cobs) in the refrigerator, which is unacceptable and is highly likely to lead to contamination and ultimately be injurious to the health of the gluten intolerant consumer.
“This is the second time that this offence has been identified at your premises.
“I was disappointed to find cleaning throughout your premises was poor and that the structure of your premises had deteriorated significantly since my last inspection.
“Whilst staff were able to discuss food safety it was apparent that there was no implementation of basic cleanliness, which is one of the basic building blocks of producing safe food. Although staff said they had completed training there was no evidence that staff handling food had received training.”
The outlet’s food hygiene score was correct as of December 3, 2021.
