Q

We have concrete floors throughout our house. What’s the best way to cover them for the most efficient warmth?

Kathleen Foster

A

That’s a good question. Underfloor heating is good if the concrete is insulated. I’d suggest installing a warm underlay and carpet.

Q

We get condensation on our bedroom window which is triple glazed. The wall has been insulated, the air vent is open 24/7 and we also have a moisture catcher on the windowsill. The radiator is situated on the opposite internal wall.

William Carter

A

Condensation means a window is getting cold on the inside. The ideal position for your radiator is under the window, so it would be best to look into repositioning it in this manner if you can.

Q

Every time I open my shower door in the morning it screeches and the door seal scrapes against the glass door. Any ideas?

Dave Fade

A

Try silicone lubricant. It comes in an aerosol can and you simply spray it on the offending squeak. Unlike WD40, it won’t streak and is ideal for lubricating rubber/ glass interfaces.

Q

I need to install additional outdoor lights to cover the two side gardens. The light will be attached to the house wall or eaves. I don’t want light holders with built-in bulbs as I may want to use dawn to dusk bulbs. Any ideas?

Catherine Doctor

AIf you’re looking for a fitting that will take a dawn to dusk bulb, go to an electrical supplier or department in a DIY store and look for Edison screw lamps (E27). Something like a coach light will have E27 fittings for bulbs so you can easily find something suitable to fit.
