County spot ranked among least ‘Instagrammable’ in the UK
A PART of the Derbyshire skyline has been named one of the “least Instagrammable spots” in the country.
People up and down the nation upload snaps to photo and video sharing social media platform Instagram every day.
But a photography firm that has rated UK landmarks for how good they would look on Insta ranks a site near Swadlincote near the bottom of the list.
Drakelow Power Station was named as one of the top five worst places to take a social media picture by Wex Photo Video, which has compiled a list of the spots across the country.
However, it still wanted to show that anywhere can be
Instagrammable with the right equipment, so Wex and photography collective Take More Photos looked to get striking images of the power station.
The photo, above right, was taken by London-based photographer Isaac Cambridge, who said: “I came across this pylon in the middle of a field near the old power station and I knew this would be a great opportunity for an unusual shot.
“People go past pylons all the time or see them in the distance, but we never get underneath, so I took the shot in this way to get a new perspective on something familiar.
“Do take extra care if attempting to take a shot like this – safety should always come before a good photograph.”
Drakelow Power Station was once the largest electricity generation site in Europe. The site was decommissioned through the late 90s, with the plant being fully demolished in 2006. However, the nearby pylons remain.
The days of the windswept and empty site in its present incarnation are numbered though, as more than 2,000 homes are expected to be built on land off Walton Road. Part of those plans include a new river crossing, replacing the single-track metal Bailey bridge which has been a traffic bottleneck since the 1940s.
There are also proposals to create a solar farm stretching across more than 500 acres of agricultural land north of Catton.
The proposed solar farm is so large the Government will decide its outcome next year, rather than South Derbyshire District Council.
