City council gives its bin collections a week-long Christmas break

-

DERBY City Council has announced that its bin collection service “will be taking a break over the festive period” with collections to be suspended from Tuesday, December 28 and Tuesday, January 4.

Different areas of Derby have either their blue, brown or black bins collected at different times in the week.

And so, the council suggests that the “quickest and easiest” way to check bin collections is to use the bin look-up tool on its website.

The council has also provided its top tips for reducing waste this Christmas which include: making a swap to plain or recycled wrapping papers as opposed to foil covered or plastic wrapping.

Its suggests removing embellishments and glitter from Christmas cards before placing them in the recycling.

It is also asking people to squash cartons and cardboard boxes to make more room in the blue bins and to make sure wrapping is done before the last Christmas collection to avoid a build-up of rubbish.

Councillor Jerry Pearce, cabinet member for Streetpride and Public Spaces said: “We all think of the festive period as a time of giving but sadly, it can also be one of the most wasteful times of year.

“Often, we can get carried away with deals and buy too much food that goes to waste or, buying gifts that have excessive packaging.

“I’d urge everyone to take a step back and think about what and how much they’re purchasing in the run up to Christmas and to try and reduce their waste.

“It’s not just good for the planet and climate change, it’s good for your pocket too and will save you money.”
