Ewe Rams take big lead into new year

-

DERBY County Women extended their lead in the FA Women’s National League Northern Division to six points as they closed the first half of their season with a 2-0 win away to Middlesbrough.

First-half goals from Sophie Domingo and Emily Joyce saw a dominant Ewe Rams side comfortably take the points.

“We were really pleased with the intensity of the first half,” said coach Kiran Savage.

“We’d probably have liked more goals. It was all us but you never want to leave it at 2-0 as one goal can swing it completely.

“The character and the attitude of this side has been top class. It’s been like that all season and really shows the spirit.

“We work hard and we do it together and now we can go and enjoy our Christmas.

“We’ll recharge our batteries and be ready to go in the new year against Brighouse in the League Cup.

“We’re top of the league, six points clear and the pressure is now on other teams. They can’t afford to slip up and its always great to have those points on the board.”

Development team goalkeeper Zoe Millington and new signing Emelia Wilson came into the side in place of Sarah Morgan (illness) and Sherry McCue (injury).

In a sharp start, Ewe Rams had the ball in the net after four minutes but Ellie Gilliatt had handled the ball just before shooting.

Amy Sims and Precious Hamilton went close before Derby took the lead after 17 minutes when the hosts failed to clear and Domingo slotted the ball in.

A mistake from Boro keeper Rosie Todd allowed Ewe Rams to extend their lead six minutes later.

Her clearance went straight to Gilliatt and when her shot hit the post, Joyce tucked in the rebound.

Todd was inspired after that, though, keeping Derby at bay.

Boro had a goal disallowed for a foul just before half-time but the second half continued with much the same pattern, with Derby on top.

Tackles flew in from both sides but neither could find the net.

Jayden Maxwell had a great chance for the home side after an hour when she was put through but shot wide.

Hamilton, Gilliatt and Domingo all spurned further chances. DERBY COUNTY WOMEN: Millington, Sims, Tinsley, Miles, Jackson, Formaston, Joyce, Wilson, Domingo, Gilliatt, Hamilton (May). Other subs:
