READERS TORN ON PM’S FUTURE IN NO.10

-

DERBY Telegraph readers remain split over whether Boris Johnson should resign after news broke he attended a boozy party in Downing Street at the height of the first lockdown.

The Prime Minister admitted at Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday he attended what he thought was a “work gathering” in the garden of Number 10, but despite apologising said in hindsight he would have told staff to leave.

Mr Johnson has been under intense pressure from all sides after an email from his principal private secretary, Martin Reynolds, invited colleagues to “socially distanced drinks” on May 20, 2020, to “make the most of the lovely weather” – urging them to “bring your own booze”.

He faced calls to resign eight times in just over half an hour in the House of Commons, with many of his own MPs reportedly writing to the influential 1922 Committee, headed by Sir Graham Brady, which can decide whether there will be a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister if it receives 54 letters from Tory MPs.

But after being asked whether they think the Prime Minister should resign, Derbyshire Live readers shared a variety of views.

Sue Barber said: “If he had any conscience at all he would have resigned already and the rest of the people who attended also. People were not allowed to visit dying relatives or attend their funerals in many cases, but they saw fit to have a garden party ??!! Absolutely shameful.”

But others questioned who would replace Mr Johnson if he did resign.

Graham Wright said: “No, because there’s no one in the Cabinet capable of replacing him and certainly no one in the opposition parties worth a look in.”
