1949:

American tennis player Gussie Moran caused a stir at Wimbledon when she appeared wearing lace-trimmed knickers designed by Teddy Tinling. The All England Club was so outraged that Tinling was not a welcome visitor for 33 years.

1960:

Floyd Patterson knocked out Sweden’s Ingemar Johansson in the fifth round at the New York Polo Grounds to become the first man to regain boxing’s world heavyweigh­t title. Patterson had lost his crown to the Swede a year earlier.

1987:

New Zealand beat France 29-9 in Auckland to become the first winners of the Rugby World Cup.

2006:

Michael Owen was carried off on a stretcher with a ruptured knee ligament in England’s 2-2 draw with Sweden in their group match at the World Cup in Germany. He was out of action for almost a year.

2008:

Dutch club FC Twente named former England manager Steve McClaren as their new coach. McClaren led Twente to the Eredivisie title in 2010 and went on to have two stints as Derby County head coach.

2010:

The France squad refused to train after declaring their opposition to the decision to send home Nicolas Anelka from the World Cup in South Africa.

2011:

FIFA confirmed that its vicepresid­ent Jack Warner, who had been accused of bribery in the run-up to the FIFA presidenti­al vote, had resigned from all football activity.

2014:

West Bromwich Albion signed defender Joleon Lescott from Manchester City on a two-year contract.

2019:

Andy Murray made a winning return to competitiv­e tennis as he and Feliciano Lopez beat Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the men’s doubles at Queen’s.
