Children can’t sleep because of ‘feral yobs’ racing on road

DAD FEARS THERE WILL BE A FATAL CRASH

A DERBY dad has said his children are kept awake at night because of “feral yobs” using a road as a drag strip.

The Chellaston resident, who does not want to be named because of fear of repercussions, said the “constant” noise coming from Infinity Park Way is waking his children up and stopping him from sleeping at night.

This comes after numerous people living in the area raised noise and safety concerns about incidents on the road. The dad said: “It drives me bonkers. Sometimes it starts at 5am and it wakes my kids up, it wakes me up. I have to sleep with earplugs in. I don’t know if I’m more sensitive to noise than others but I can hear it all the time.”

“I’m sick to death of it. I take the dogs around the field and the amount of cars I’ve seen doing absolutely stupid speeds.

“I’ve been a few times where I’ve crossed a pedestrian crossing and people have flown through red lights. Now I’ve resorted to getting on my bike and going up to Infinity Park Way to try and get pictures and video to send to the police. I don’t want to but I feel like I have to.”

The resident says the area has become a “beacon” for such activities, with noise sometimes starting around 9pm. “I think they’re gathering and then they just do donuts around the mini islands, whether it’s like a meet-up or something. We can just hear them going up and down.

“It drives me mad… but I think a lot of people are fed up with it,” he added.

A number of people living on the Chellaston estate agree that the problem has worsened in recent months, but this resident says boy racers at Infinity Park Way have been an issue since the road was built in 2016.

He recalled one incident in the winter of 2020 where his van was kicked by one of the spectators in the Derbyshire road after they decided to go and investigate the noise.

He said: “I heard all this racing and I thought, ‘what is going on?’ So I got in my van and drove up and it was just manic, chaos.

“And then as I drove up, some lads came up as I slowed down for the island, and just booted the side of my van and I just thought, proper feral yobs. All I was doing was driving down. “I don’t know what was happening, I hadn’t given them any abuse. I was just slowly driving down.” A number of residents have called for the implementation of speed cameras in the area in the hope that their presence could deter people from using the road as a race track. “I think it’s one of those where it will take somebody to get knocked over, or killed, or a crash before anything,” said the dad.

“They could do what they did on the A52 and just put some average speed cameras up, I know cost is involved, though.” Recent footage has emerged showing boy racers using the road as a drag strip. The Derby Telegraph cannot confirm whether the individuals in this video are associated with this incident.
