A YOUNG father led police on three separate vehicle chases, including one where he drove at and hit an officer.

Derby Crown Court heard how Cyle Jenkins was in a stolen car being followed by fellow criminal Alan Singleton when he sped through the county during the early hours of December 30, 2019.

Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said: “A stolen VW Passat triggered the ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) camera and was followed by a police car.

There was also a Transit-style vehicle which had also been reported stolen and the officer noticed a Land Rover which, too, had been reported as stolen.

“A police officer described having to accelerate hard to catch up with them travelling at 80mph in a 40mph limit.

He said: “The Transit went on to the wrong side of the road and a short while later the Passat did pull over but the Transit carried on.

“The Passat was abandoned by Mr Singleton in a field and he was detained in a farmyard. The Transit continued to speed and the police had to use their stinger device (which punctures tyres) at the A616 junction (at Barlborough) and it then swerved, mounting a grass verge in Chesterfield Road.”

Mr Jones said that vehicle, driven by Jenkins, then pulled over, the defendant got out of the passenger side and ran, but was detained in a nearby garden.

He said the two other dangerous driving offences happened on March 25, 2021 and on November 3, 2021, both in Doncaster.

The prosecutor said the second one saw Jenkins ride a motorcycle towards a police car and strike an officer who had got out the vehicle.

Jenkins, 20, of Haig Avenue, Stainforth,

Doncaster, pleaded guilty to theft, three counts of dangerous driving and to driving without a valid licence and insurance.

He was handed 15 months in a young offender institution, suspended for 18 months, and was ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to attend a 31-day accredited programme and 20 rehabilitation sessions with the probation service and was disqualified from driving for two years.

Emma Coverley, his barrister, said her client has a partner and a 19-month-old child.

Recorder Collingwood Thompson told him: “This is last chance saloon for you, Mr Jenkins. If you carry on offending the future is going to look pretty bleak for you and you will receive longer and longer prison sentences.”

Singleton, 41, of Bootham Crescent, Stainforth, Doncaster, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and theft and has 22 convictions for 64 offences to his name.

He was jailed for 11 months which will run concurrently to the sevenand-a-half year sentence he is currently serving for a death by dangerous driving he was convicted of earlier this year.

On that occasion, on July 21, 2020, a judge said he was “racing” at more than 100mph when he drove in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic before losing control of his vehicle on the A18 between Doncaster and Scunthorpe. The car struck a kerb and hit a lamppost, before crashing into a ditch and coming to an abrupt halt.

Singleton’s passenger and friend, 22-year-old Paul Needham, died at the scene.

Singleton is currently on a fiveyear disqualification.

Helen Chapman, his barrister, said: “His friend got killed and that brings him a great deal of shame and upset.”
