‘FOREST FOR THE FUTURE’ SET TO OPEN THIS SATURDAY

- By MATT JACKSON

AN “urban forest” is to open in the centre of Derby on Saturday. Dubbed the “Forest for the Future” it will boast 150 trees and is designed to create a dialogue about climate change.

Located on Market

Place, it is thought the six-week project will cost around £163,000 with council chiefs hoping it will bring increased footfall into the area. It will be able to provide outdoor dining space for 100 people as well as hosting entertainment acts.

The name Forest for the Future was picked by 433 young people across the city, who chose their favourite from a sixstrong shortlist. It is hoped the forest can leave a legacy in the city.

Youth mayor Omar Aslam was one of the people who whittled down the shortlist. He said: “One can not wait for the arrival of ‘The Forest for the Future’ to arrive in Derby.

“As young people of the city, it’s important that we tackle head on the challenges of climate change alongside raising awareness of these challenges. The Forest Of The Future is a great chance for people to discuss the relevant topics of climate change. A fantastic new legacy for the city of Derby.”

Gloria Osei Bonsu, deputy youth mayor, said: “We can’t wait for the Forest for the Future to arrive in Derby. As young people in the city, it’s important that we face up to the challenges of climate change and raise awareness of those challenges. The Forest for the Future is a great conversation starter and a fantastic legacy for our city.”

Cultural organisations in Derby will be able to use the space within the forest to host live events. The space will remain open until August 29.

Councillor Jerry Pearce, Derby City Council cabinet member for streetpride, leisure and public spaces, added: “The Forest for the Future is a wonderful addition to our city centre for the summer. It’s a great way to initiate those tough conversations about our climate and natural environment and what each of us can do to protect it. It’s important that young people in the city are engaged with their futures and the environment they’ll live in.”

Alongside the Forest for the Future, events will be held across the city centre by Down To Earth Derby and Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. These are aimed at helping residents and visitors learn more about climate change, biodiversity and the natural environment.
