Police making speed checks arrest drink-driver

-

POLICE carrying out speed checks in a South Derbyshire village arrested a motorist for drink-driving after they saw her swerving in the road.

The officers from Mercia Police Safer Neighbourhood Team were out in Burton Road, Repton on Monday evening conducting routine speed checks.

When they saw the swerving driver go past, they got into their car to catch her up, pulled her over and conducted a breath test. She blew a reading of 75 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35.

She was arrested and taken into custody.

The officers had earlier in the evening issued “traffic offence reports” to two other drivers for speeding. The team commented on their Facebook page: “An inebriated female motorist was arrested last night (Monday, June 27), after she was spotted hurtling through a speed check.

“Officers Bob, Holmes and Williams jumped in a marked police car and caught up with the driver on the outskirts of the village. A woman was breathalysed at the location and blew a reading of 75 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – which is twice the legal limit of 35.

“She was arrested at the roadside and taken to custody.

“Earlier in the evening, two further drivers were issued with traffic offence reports for speeding near Chestnut Way.

“Regular followers of our social media pages in South Derbyshire will be aware that we often receive a bizarre flow of unpalatable excuses from those persons caught speeding – and last night’s shift was no exception.

“In the past officers have been offered explanations such as: ‘I was driving fast because I needed the toilet’ to ‘I was only following the quick car in front.’

“And yesterday, officers were gobsmacked to be offered an unusual view from a motorist that he thought the speed limit was different on the same road depending on which direction he was travelling.

“Police quickly pointed to the clearly visible signage indicating the speed limit applied in both directions and reported the driver for a traffic offence.”
