1919: Jack Dempsey beat Jess Willard to become the new world heavyweight boxing champion.
1969: British tennis player Ann Jones won her first Wimbledon crown after 13 previous attempts, beating Billie-Jean King 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
2004: Greece won the Euro 2004 final with a surprise 1-0 victory over Portugal in Lisbon thanks to Angelos Charisteas’ header.
2007: Fernando Torres completed his move from Atletico Madrid to Liverpool.
2009: American Serena Williams beat sister Venus Williams to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title.
2010: Spain’s Rafael Nadal won the Wimbledon men’s singles title by beating Tomas Berdych.
2013: West Bromwich Albion signed former France striker Nicolas Anelka on a free transfer.
2016: Mark Cavendish won stage three of the Tour de France to claim his 28th Tour stage win and move level with Bernard Hinault in second on the all-time list behind Eddy Merckx on 34. He has susbsequently matched Merckx’s record but, controversially, his team have not selected him for this year’s Tour.
2017: Team Dimension Data announced that Mark Cavendish was forced to withdraw from the Tour de France after sustaining injuries in a crash on stage four, while world champion Peter Sagan was disqualified from the Tour for causing the incident.
2018: In motor racing, McLaren’s under-fire racing director Eric Boullier resigned from his post with immediate effect.
2021: Crystal Palace announced former France, Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira as their new manager on a three-year deal.
