Mental health hospital receives ‘good’ rating

-

A DERBY mental health hospital has been rated as ‘Good’ by the health watchdog after its first inspection in four years.

The Cygnet Hospital Derby, in London Road, was described by the Care Quality Commission as “safe” and “well led”, while staff showed “compassion and kindness” to and “understood the individual needs” of patients.

The routine inspection was carried out between Tuesday, May 10, and Wednesday, May 18, this year, after its last inspection also returned a ‘good’ rating in June 2018.

The CQC examined the hospital over five inspection areas and concluded that it was ‘good’ across all five, deeming it safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

The report praised wards as being safe, clean and well staffed. Staff were described as being able to manage and assess risk, follow good safeguarding practices, develop holistic relationships with and care plans for patients, and discharged their roles effectively.

However, the CQC noted that wards “looked tired” and redecoration was needed, seclusion on one ward was not always in line with the Mental Health Act code of practice, documentation was at times messy, and there were at times gaps in the records of monitoring patients who self-administered medication. But the watchdog said that some changes were made during the inspection to remedy these issues and that redecoration work had begun in some areas.

The hospital is run by Cygnet Health Care, which also provides other services around Derbyshire.

It has three wards with a combined 45 beds for adults aged 18 and over, providing low-secure and mental health rehabilitation care, a mental health rehabilitation service and a specialist female emotionally unstable personality disorder service.

The CQC said: “We spoke with 14 patients across all three wards.

Patients said that staff supported them well, were understanding, kind and always polite. Staff made time for them and listened to them and helped them feel safe. Patients said they had paid job roles which helped to prepare them for their rehabilitation or aided their recovery.

“Patients across all wards said there were a lot of activities on the wards, including bowling, going out for walks, for lunch, to shops, karaoke and a music therapist visited in the evenings a few times a week, including at weekends.”

Mark Varney, hospital manager at Cygnet Derby, said: “This is after a lot of hard work and dedication from teams across the hospital. I’m especially grateful for the positive feedback given about the staff. Thank you to all staff and service users who gave their input.”

Dr Tony Romero, chief executive officer of Cygnet Health Care, said: “Despite the pandemic, I am delighted our staff at Cygnet Hospital Derby have been recognised for delivering safe, respectful care and achieving a ‘good’ rating in all areas. I want to publicly thank the team for their continued commitment throughout the challenges of Covid.”
