Long-standing Market Hall trader opens Derbion store

-

A LONG-standing Derby Market Hall trader has opened a new store at Derbion shopping centre.

Poynton’s, a newsagent which also stocks model trains and diecast cars, has opened its new outlet on Crown Walk.

The family-run business established more than 150 years ago is well-known by thousands of people across the city and has served several generations of customers over its many decades of trading.

Established back in 1848, the store continues to stock newspapers and magazines, but now also sells Hornby models and Scalextric sets, as well as sweets and cards.

With the Market Hall currently undergoing a multimillion-pound revamp, and not expected to reopen until 2024, Poynton’s decided to set up shop elsewhere.

Announcing the arrival of the new store, which opened on Tuesday, a Derbion spokesperson said: “Poynton News has been well-known within Derby for 150 years offering everything from newspapers and magazines to cards, models, diecasts and sweets. A big welcome to Derbion.”

The business also runs Poynton’s Pastimes at Park Farm Shopping Centre, in Allestree, which stocks model kits, cars and trains. This store will continue to trade alongside the Derbion branch.

Also in Derbion, Jack Wills, which stocks men’s and women’s fashion, opened earlier this month on July 1. The opening came nearly three years after Derby’s previous store in Sadler Gate, in the Cathedral Quarter, closed its doors.

Construction work has now started to get the new Frasers store in Derbion ready to open before Christmas. It will be taking up the unit previously occupied by Debenhams.

Fashion retailer River Island is also taking on a bigger unit on Level 2. Spanning 11,000 sq ft, the outlet is set to open its doors later this month. It comes after Next announced it is putting “significant investment” into its store, with a revamp set to be completed by mid-August.
