SUGGESTED SHORT WALK

THE WALK

■■For a good part of this extremely enjoyable walk, look one way and it will seem as if you are in the countryside, look the other and you will realise that you are on the edge of the city.

■■THE ROUTE

■■1. Start the walk from the car park at King George V Playing Fields off Carlisle Avenue. Walk to the right past the children’s play area to join up with the footpath through Clemson’s Park and turn left.

■■2. Maintain the same direction as the path starts to descend to reach Richmond Close and then Queensbury Chase. Go to the left along Squires Way and follow it around to reach Maize Close. Where you turn right and after a few yards keep straight on along an estate path.

■■3. At the end of the path, turn left, with a roundabout in front of you. Continue straight on to reach a path lined with bushes that runs along the southern side of old Heatherton. Here you turn left and follow the path to Moorway Lane, which you cross, before walking around a very large pond, Heatherton Pond, and a partially wooded area before returning to Moorway Lane.

■■4. Cross the road and turn right to follow a footpath that is separated from Moorway Lane by a hedge. Shortly before reaching Derby Moor Community Sports College, go through the first opening on the right. Cross the road, and follow a surfaced path, signed ‘Moorway Lane Open Space and Millennium Wood’

■■5. When you come to a fork in the path, keep to the right and follow it as it loops around to an exit point on your right. Here you turn to the right past an information board and walk down an access road to reach Oaklands Avenue.

■■6. Turn left up Oaklands Avenue and at the top go to the left up Blagreaves Lane. After a few yards cross the road to a surfaced path that takes you across an open space of grassland. Ignore the first path crossing you come to and continue straight on.

■■7. Turn right at the next path into an area of woodland. On exiting follow the main path through Sunnydale Park and Nature Reserve, turning left by the children’s play area. Ignore the exit into Willson Avenue and continue along the path until it ends at Rosamund’s Drive. Here you turn right and then left after 70 yards into Serina Avenue. At the top of the Avenue, follow the path to the left of No 35. Continue close to the hedge, with Rosehill Methodist Sports Ground on your right. Ignore all the roads on your left until you reach Trafford Way where you go to the left.

■■8. Turn right at the end of Trafford Way and walk-up Pavilion Way to a roundabout where you go left along Brayfield Road. Then after only a few yards take a left turn into Hollowood Avenue.

■■9. Continue along Hollowood Avenue as it curves around until just after passing Cotswold Close where the road starts to bend sharply to the right. Go straight ahead along Cross Close Walk. At the end of which you cross The Hollow (road) and maintain the same direction to walk up Carlisle Avenue back to the starting point of the walk.
