Derby’s sights on three in a row as they hit the road

BUT TOUGH TEST ON THE CARDS AT BRIDGNORTH

- RUGBY UNION

DERBY aim to make it three wins in a row tomorrow when they travel to face Bridgnorth in Regional 1 Midlands (2.15pm).

And they’re in high spirits after a last-gasp home victory against Burton last weekend.

It was also a close finish when Derby celebrated a thrilling 26-24 win against Bridgnorth in the reverse fixture in November.

Bridgnorth has been a tough place to visit for Derby in recent years, although it was close there last season when the hosts edged a 27-23 win.

“It’s always tough at Bridgnorth and they’re right next to the river so I expect it will be a very muddy battle,” said Derby head coach Mark Bradley.

“We beat them at home right at the finish earlier this season, so they will be looking for revenge.

“I can’t remember winning there during my reign as head coach. It’s a difficult place to go and win.

“We have gone close a couple of times but then just slipped up in the final minutes.

“But we’re in good spirits and playing well, while everybody is as fit as they can be at this time of year.

“The boys are all happy and raring to go.”

In the backs, Derby will be without Fred Chell for tomorrow’s trip as he is rested with a bruised shoulder but Ben Wilcox is available again.

“Bridgnorth are a very physical side,” Bradley added. “Up front, our

forwards will have a good challenge ahead of them.

“And Bridgnorth are very direct in the centres, as well, so that’s why we have picked Jake Roome and Ethan Pearson in at centre this week. Ben Wilcox will begin on the bench and then come on later.

“It should be an interesting battle in there!”

In November, Derby won thanks to a last-gasp converted Jeri Oldfield try and he touched down again in last weekend’s win against Burton.

“Jeri is believing in himself more, he’s a good player,” said Bradley.

“He’s playing consistently well now and scoring tries, hopefully that will continue this week.”
