Pompey enjoy the night with feet up

-

TUESDAY night was a pleasant evening for all involved with League One leaders Portsmouth as, without a game, they will have happily watched Derby County and Bolton Wanderers, in second and third, slip up.

Sam Humphrys’ 69th-minute goal gave Wigan Athletic a 1-0 win – and a double – over Bolton.

Barnsley, Peterborough United and Oxford United were also out of action on Tuesday.

Pompey therefore retain their seven point lead but Derby no longer have a game in hand on them – Bolton still have one.

Barnsley, in fourth, have a game in hand on Bolton and are one goal better off, too.

At the other end of the table, Burton Albion remained five points above the relegation zone, the limitations of the teams around them keeping them clear of immediate danger despite a third successive home defeat.

Apart from bottom side Carlisle United beating the Brewers, only Charlton, beating Derby, were victorious.

Fleetwood Town rescued a dramatic draw from 2-0 down away to fellow strugglers Port Vale.

Jayden Stockley was sent on at half-time and salvaged a point as he struck in the 88th and 93rd minutes.

Jensen Weir’s opener and Ethan Chislett’s penalty had earlier put the home side in charge.

Cambridge United were beaten 1-0 away to Stevenage – who have nipped back into the play-off places – with Jordan Roberts hitting the target in the first half, a result which keeps the U’s ahead of the Brewers on goal difference.

Shrewsbury Town are behind Burton on goal difference after losing 3-0 away to Lincoln City.

Teddy Bishop opened the scoring after six minutes, Reeco Hackett doubled the lead after 58 minutes and Lasse Sorensen hit a spectacular follow-up from out wide after Bishop’s penalty miss in the 67th minute.

Cheltenham Town, Albion’s next opponents, stayed five points behind them when late goals from Joe Low and former Brewer Bez Lubala gave Wycombe Wanderers a 2-0 home win. Freddie Potts also missed a penalty for the Chairboys.

Leyton Orient nipped ahead of Blackpool with a 1-0 home win secured by Ollie O’Neill’s goal.
