A STAPLE of Derby’s hospitality scene is to close its doors today.

Bean Caffe was launched by a mother and daughter more than a decade ago and then taken over by its current owners five years ago.

The Friar Gate venue has grown into a thriving, successful business and has survived through tough challenges brought on by Covid and the cost of living crisis.

However, the owners have announced the business is to close today, March 28.

Describing the decision to close as “incredibly difficult”, the owners said: “We would like to send a massive thank you to all our loyal customers, friends and family for your amazing support to Bean over the last five years.

“We are beyond grateful for the sense of community created here.

“Whether you have supported us through coming in for a coffee or attending an event here, it really does mean so much. Bean will close under our ownership on Thursday, March 29.

“Please accept our sincere thanks for your support.”

The Derby Telegraph reported in November 2023 that despite the coffee shop blooming with success, owner Swain Myers had put the business up for sale.

The Mickleover-based cafe owner said: “I’m just hoping that someone comes along and sees what I first saw in this cafe and wants to do the same.

“I want to spend more time with my wife and family at the weekends and book more trips away and, unfortunately, that doesn’t really align with running a busy cafe like this one.

“We had thoughts of getting a manager in to run Bean but with things like this, you either run it or you don’t, so I’ve decided to take a step back.”
