Abandoned former workers’ club for sale 17 years after
A HUGE derelict building on the outskirts of Derby has been listed for sale after nearly two decades of inactivity.
The Asterdale Club in Borrowash Road, Spondon, has been listed on the property website, Zoopla, with a guide price of £2 million.
The huge building is being sold alongside the 17.8 acres of grounds it sits within and boasts a “rare freehold opportunity”, according to estate agent Innes England.
The building is believed to have started life as the workers’ club for the nearby Celanese Acetate factory, which closed in 2012 after operating for almost 100 years.
Despite remaining abandoned and boarded up for 17 years, the club itself has been a hotspot for trespassing. A child was dramatically rescued by his friend after he fell through the roof of the building in 2018.
Police were called out to the incident at the Asterdale Club and found 15 teenagers had gained entry to the building.
Witnesses had seen some youths climbing on the roof and, when police arrived, the youths went to escape and the child fell through the roof as he tried to leave.
Officers said the Asterdale Club had been derelict for a number of years and described the current condition of the building as “extremely unsafe”.
News of the dramatic incident was released on the Chaddesden, Derwent, Oakwood and Spondon police Facebook page.
PC Mark Atterbury previously said: “I have witnessed the tragic scene of a fatal fall by a young person, who was exploring a derelict building. The last thing I want to happen is for another young person to suffer the same fate.
“It isn’t just their lives they are putting at risk, Officers from the fire service and police are putting their lives at risk also by searching these dangerous places to make sure the kids are safe.
“Please speak with your children and make sure they understand the serious consequences of urban exploring.”
