TV Pick Of The Week BEST FILMs
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Tomorrow, ITV, 12.25pm
There are bound to be comparisons with Tim Burton’s big-budget remake (and the recent prequel starring Timothée Chalamet), but while the sets may not be as lavish, this 1971 offering remains a classic, thanks to Gene Wilder’s definitive performance as Willy Wonka (above). He manages to be charmingly playful yet slightly sinister.
Easy A Monday, BBC Three, 10pm
Sharp and smutty teen comedy, with Emma Stone as a high school no-mark whose social standing suddenly soars when she fakes losing her virginity. It owes a debt to director John Hughes and fans of the late film-maker will love it.
Rocketman Tuesday, Film4, 11.15pm
Taron Egerton showed potential in The Kingsman franchise, but his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman is out of this world. Pun intended. Prepare to be dazzled by the bright lights, bold costumes and brilliant music of the fantasy film, based on the life and work of Elton himself.
Titanic
Wednesday, Film4, 9pm
Buoyed by the on-screen chemistry of
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet (pictured), James Cameron’s mega-budget love story sailed away with 11 Academy Awards and broke box office records until the film-maker trumped himself with the equally epic Avatar. Titanic also installed Celine Dion at the top of global charts for what seemed like an eternity with My Heart Will Go On.
The Blair Witch Project Thursday, BBC1, 12.15am
Three film students venture into the woods to explore the local urban legend, The Blair Witch. Equipped only with handheld cameras and hiking gear, the trio soon get lost in the dense forest. This influential horror remains disturbingly authentic and genuinely creepy.
I, Tonya Friday, BBC2, 11.05pm
Biopic about figure skater Tonya
Harding and her rivalry at the 1994 Winter Olympics with Nancy Kerrigan. Shot in mockumentary style, Margot Robbie (pictured) puts in a brilliant performance as Tonya.
