Shoot on location

Discover how to photograph a nude image in the field

-

it can be challenging to photograph nude portraits outdoors, because of a number of logical limitations. firstly, there’s the challenge of using what is very probably a public space for something such as this. Permissions may need to be sought, and there are lots of considerations to assess surrounding privacy and safety. There are also common issues that affect any outdoor shoot – chiefly, of course, the weather. This is particularly concerning when you have a model who will be exposed to the elements, though. all of this requires planning, a clear idea of what you aim to achieve and good communication with the model. You also need to be highly efficient.

after having had the initial idea and made the sketch we now need to find a location to suit the image. i always pre-visualise the image as that way it gives me a good idea of what the location should look like. on the day of the shoot, the very first thing we do is to check the weather forecast. having been to the location previously we know exactly what time of day the shoot should take place. on arrival at the location the first thing i do is walk to various areas with the model, making sure that the lighting is exactly what i had envisaged.

if i need to add light i will set up either the Led lights or the rangers. i tend to use the flash as a fill-in light, not as a main light, although it has been known for me to shoot the synchro-sun style on some shoots.

once the model is ready we put her in position and start to create part of the main image. More often than not i use three locations. as the shoot goes on the more creative it gets and you might see better areas to explore. The shoots can take anywhere from two to four hours; we always stop for light refreshments. The biggest issue here is that if you’re shooting an evening shot, according to what time of the year the light obviously changes drastically from bright to twilight or from Twilight to blackness, so make sure you plan your shoot with at least a four-hour window of light.

Back at the studio the selection is made. overlays are selected for blending and the process of creating a fine-art image begins in order to create the final product.
