TOP TIPS FOR CREATIVE NUDES
SHOOTING ANGLE
This is one of the most important decisions a photographer can make. shoot low, shoot high, shoot from the side, shoot from the back, shoot from the front. Try and cover as many angles as you can. The way to be fully creative is to not simply stay in your comfort zone; push the boundaries.
LENS CHOICE
The wide-angle lens distorts and emphasises an abstract angle of the human form. So don’t be afraid to try out different lenses and find the one that suits your style.
CREATIVE POSES
Posing is possibly one of the hardest things to learn. How can we understand what a particular pose or body gesture means? A good source for me other than attending seminars was to study many art books featuring the human form and on how to draw the human body.
RULES OF PHOTOGRAPHY
It’s okay to break the rules once you know them, but not before. Learn about the composition of photographs. Learn about the rule of thirds, centred composition, symmetry, leading lines, dynamic diagonals, simplicity and minimalism.
COLOURS AND GELS
Hollywood always uses blue and orange, blue for the tension, orange for the warm. You’ll find most films use this technique and it works fantastic on nude photography.
FOR YOUR SAFETY
I’m more than happy to have the model bring a chaperone along with them. I personally prefer family or friends to come with them to support. If in doubt about who you’re photographing and you don’t know them at all, I generally ask them if they don’t mind me recording the session with a voice recorder for the safety of both of us.
SOFTWARE AND PHOTO MANIPULATION
My suggestion to you as creative photographers is to source and find software offering finishes that would suit your images.
PERSONAL INDEMNITY
This is a really important consideration in case anything happens to the model while you are photographing them.
