Leading landscape photographer and author Matt Pinner (pinners-photography. co.uk) discusses his experiences of publishing a photography book
HOW DID YOU COME TO PUBLISH YOUR FIRST BOOK OF PHOTOGRAPHY? TELL US ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC CAREER SO FAR. I have been obsessed with landscape photography since I first got engrossed in the subject, as it’s one that is ever changing. Mother Nature can be very cruel but produces some spectacular images, which is why I knew if I ever did a book I would want it to be of landscapes. After researching a little into how I could do it, I was very fortunate to have a publisher approach me to write Dorset
in Photographs – they already had previous books in the series and wanted me to be added into the family sequence. WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT PREPARING AND PUBLISHING YOUR FIRST BOOK? Gaining a series of 120 images of the area you live and specialise in sounds easy. However, it was incredibly difficult, as you need to get a good variation; I had mostly coastal shots as I love the Jurassic Coast, so I lacked inland images. I had a deadline for which I needed to gather all my content, so I did feel as if I was running against the clock. HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES? To be honest, it will sound quite cheesy, but I just had to believe in myself. I love photography, especially landscapes, so I found that I had to stop putting myself under pressure and just enjoy the process. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Well I tend to take everything one step at a time, but I do have a couple of things in the works. I have been fortunate enough to be asked to do a second book called Hampshire in
Photographs, which will be released October/ November 2018. Alongside my upcoming book I also have a 2019 Dorset calendar which is on sale currently on my website.
