Simpson: We have to seize our opportunity to make play-offs

-

BOSTON United’s Joe Simpson has called on the players to grab the opportunity that lies ahead.

The Pilgrims were unable to secure all three points from Saturday’s encounter against Scarborough Athletic – but moved a point closer to the play-off picture.

Results elsewhere lifted the Pilgrims to within two points of the top seven, with a game in hand, despite a 0-0 stalemate against the Seadogs.

Kelsey Mooney and Jacob Hazel were denied in quick succession by

Ryan Whitley in the first half, but Scarborough squandered late chances through Harry Green, Kole Hall and Finlay Barnes.

Results elsewhere helped in the end as Boston were unable to take all three points, and after back-toback defeats which came before Saturday, the team are stumbling over the line at this moment rather than sprinting.

The point left Boston knowing wins in their final two games would guarantee them a place in the top seven, which would be classed as a great achievement in itself for this group.

Simpson said: “The objective was by the end of the game to make sure it was in our hands and it is, so that’s great, but we wanted to do it ourselves and not rely on other results.

“It’s still a point gained because Scarborough came and had a go at us even though they technically have nothing to play for, so credit to them for that. We had to be at it to stay with them at times, but the thing that frustrates us is that we didn’t impose our game on them in the second half.

“In the first half, we had some great chances from a good spell where we probably should’ve gone ahead but in the second half, it turned into a bit of a basketball game, which isn’t what we’re about.

“It’s in our hands, and now we have to go and take the opportunity.

“We’re still in a position where we can get into play-offs, and that is an outstanding effort from this group of players. We’re only going to be better for it whatever happens.”
