Award for Macmillan fundraising group

-

A dedicated fundraising group are set to pick up a top award from Macmillan Cancer Support after serving the charity for a quarter of a century.

The Eaglesham 1990 Macmillan Cancer Support Committee will receive a longevity award in recognition of their efforts over the past 26 years, which has seen them bring in a huge £400,000.

The committee, which was initially founded by local resident Maire Jeffrey, will receive the award next month.

Before the group officially started, Maire ran the committee informally for five years after her aunt lost her battle with cancer.

Initially the committee was made up of good friends and all funds raised through various activities such as dinner dances, silent auctions, garden parties, golf tournaments, went to the local Eastwood Macmillan committee.

The first fundraiser for the committee in 1990 was a dinner dance which raised the princely sum of £2000 – a sizeable amount in those days.

Maire stayed in as chair of the committee until 2003, when Jenny McIlwham took over before handing the reins over to Dodie Mitchell in 2005.

In 2011 the present chair, Eileen Morton, took on the role and is continuing the fantastic legacy of raising funds for Macmillan.

Eileen said:“We are thrilled that Macmillan have recognised our committee with this award.

“It is inspiring to work with such a small group of people who continuously give their time and commitment to such a great cause.”

Fundraising continues for the group and they have just raised over £2000 with their‘Name of the Bunny’competition.

They are currently organising their annual Ladies Night which will be held on October 28 at the Eglinton Arms Hotel.
