Teamwork is answer to pupils quiz success

A P 6 team from St Leonard’s Primary proved to be top of the class when they won their way through to the finals of a Euroquiz in Edinburgh.

Pupils Orla Kavanagh, James McCormack, Stefan Nilsson, Carter Sinclair and Aidan Tuohy performed magnificen­tly, in the quiz, which was held at Herriot Watt University, coming in third overall.

The school represente­d South Lanarkshir­e Council for the fourth year running.

Euroquiz is run by the Scottish European Educationa­l Trust, anon-political charity, which promotes education about Europe and language learning amongst Scotland’s young people.

Almost 1300 pupils from 315 schools competed in the heats held across 31 of the 32 local authoritie­s throughout the school year.

Thirty-one teams t hen participat­ed in the final, all hoping to raise the trophy as winners.

All teams demonstrat­ed an impressive level of knowledge about European countries, history, culture, current affairs and the EU.

There was a particular­ly high standard in the language round, which was created with the help of SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages.

All participan­ts were a credit to their schools and worked well together in their teams.

The finalists were put through t heir paces by quizmaster and Director of SCILT Fiona Fisher and head of the European Parliament Informatio­n Office in Scotland, Per Johansson.

Class teacher, Ed el Scott, said: “The Euroquiz is a unique competitio­n and an excellent opportunit­y for the developmen­t of team building skills as well as research and learning in the preparator­y stage.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
