Summer Fest returns with Roald Dahl fun

It’s books galore in the park Weekend festival

Scrumdiddl­yumptious fun is promised for thousands of East Kilbride children at Ca l d e r g l e n Count r y Pa r k for this weekend’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The EK Library team have been working like OompaLoomp­as to put together a magical day in the world of Roald Dahl and are promising their biggest ever launch to the Tesco Bank and Reading A g e n c y b a c k e d S u mmer Reading Challenge which gives young readers the chance to win prizes as they read.

The Calderglen Park event, on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, will f eature: Matilda reading tent, The Twits upside down t e nt, Wil l y Wonka’s sweet stall, Grandparen­ts’ b e d t i me s t o r y t e n t , f i z z y lifting bubble tent, face painting, photo booth tent, tattoo station, Golden Ticket treasure hunt, Bookbug tent.

L i b r a r y s t a f f wi l l b e o n ha n d t o s i g n u p c h i l d r e n f o r t h e S u mmer R e a d i n g Challenge on the day or you can join at any local library.

The event is part of two days of Roald Dahl-themed fun in EK to celebrate the master of children’s fiction’s 100th birthday year.

There is a weekend of Roald Dahl-themed fun ahead in East Kilbride to celebrate t he master of c hi l dren’s fiction in what would have been his 100th bir thday year.

The ever-popular annual EK Summer Fest returns to the Arts C e n t r e w i t h t wo d a y s o f f r e e f e s t i v i t i e s where s o me o f t h e author’s most popular characters will be brought to life.

Generation­s of children have been entra nced by c haracters created by Dahl as they appeared in books, on stage and on screen with perennial favourites including Charlie Bucket, Willie Wonka, The Twits, James and his insect friends in their giant peach and, of course, the much darker side in stories such as The Witches and farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean in the Fantastic Mr Fox.

Actors from Fizzgig Theatre will join a cast of street performers to mingle with and enter t ai n t he crowds while perfor mances of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes take place on the hour throughout the day.

The Outdoor Stage will also see performanc­es by choirs, dance groups, Ups and Downs Theatre and more all hosted by Edward Reid of Britain’s Got Talent.

And t h e Mugen Ta i k o Doj o promise a thrilling display with their high-energy Tartan Taiko drumming.

The always popular storytelli­ng tent and under-5s activity area will become Wonkaland for the we e k e n d a n d E a s t Ki l b r i d e ’s Yarnbomber­s will be using their knitting skill s t o create a giant peach and other woolly wonders.

Artist Neil Smith will be creating caricature­s, Radworx will have their mobile skate park and the mad h a t t e r s o f Ha r b u c k a n d Fut t o c k wi l l make a wel c o me return with their eccentric travelling millinery boutique.

Summer Fest runs from 12-5pm this Saturday and Sunday.
