Strike hits service

-

East Kilbride commuters faced delays and disruption on Tuesday as Scot rail workers took strike action – and more delays are on the way.

Yesterday marked the start of action by members of Transport Union RMT (Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers) over an increase in Driver Only Operation on Scotrail services.

And tomorrow (Thursday) the East Kilbride to Glasgow Central service will run only one train an hour, with more disruption to services on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26. RMT have also stated that industrial action could take place on Sunday, July 3, Sunday, July 10, and Sunday, July 17.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT members should not have to face the risk of their role and responsibilities being reduced and undermined.

“The workforce also know only too well that there is a very real threat to passengers of watering down and wiping out the safety critical role of the guard on these Scotrail services.”

PhilV erst er, Scot Rail managing director, added: “This strike is totally needless.

“RMT have refused point blank to talk to us about how we modernise and improve Scotland’s railway.

“Tens of thousands of our customers will be disrupted and hundreds of our own people will be hit financially as a result of their intransigence.”
