A shocked Murray pensioner has spoken of his horror after watching his car go up in a ball of flames when heartless vandals torched it.
Tommy Stevenson (77), who suffers from heart problems and has a pacemaker, was wakened by a neighbour in the early hours of Monday morning banging desperately on his door.
She heard a loud explosion and then ran out to the street to see flames engulfing Tommy’s car, which was parked in a disabled bay.
Firefighters rushed to the scene but Tommy’s car – which he not only needs to get himself out and about but also a family member who has suffered a stroke – is a write off.
Police are now i nvestigating as an accel er ant was used. It is the second arson attack inside a week with a 69-year-old woman’s car also torched in Darwin Road just after 2am on July 6.
In both cases police say the pensioners have no idea why they were targeted.
The terrifying incident left Tommy so badly shaken his neighbours had to call an ambulance because he became unwell.
He told the News :“This has absolutely knocked me for six and after losing my wife last year, it was the last thing I needed.
“The car is an absolute lifeline for me as I don’t keep too well and I also need it to get a family member about who has had a stroke.
“I just can’t understand the mentality of the people who would
