An East Kilbride man whose life was saved by a heart transplant operation stripped off for a new campaign last week to boost the number of Scots on the NHS Organ Donor Register – and he has been backed by the East Kilbride community.

Gordon Hutchison (26), from Lindsayfield, had the surgery when he was just 13, after being born with a congenital heart defect and now hopes to encourage people to sign up as a donor.

EK shopper Shona Waite (50) has already registered and is delighted to see the campaign. She said: “I have been signed up since 1987.

“I knew that it could make a difference so wanted to help out, and it’s good to see it being focused on again.”

William Steel (79) from Westwood is wary but thinks it is for a good cause. He said: “If it was possible to know who it was going to, I would be happy to help.

“And if anyone in my family needed anything I would help.

“It’s something that you need to have a think about, but if you want to do it then you should, It could really help people.”

EK shopper Robert Waite (51) admitted he hadn’t really thought about it before, but wasn’t against it.

He added: “I’m not sure what I think about it. It’s a great thing to be able to do if you are comfortable with it.”

Jean Steel (75) from Westwood also added her support : “If it can help people I don’t see why you shouldn’t.”
