Two 24-year-olds and a 23-yearold were making their way home al ong St roud Road s hor t l y af t er midnight on Sunday morning when they were subjected to a terrifying assault.

A man tried to rob the group of cash and then attacked one of the 24-year-old women so badly she lost a tooth and required hospital treatment.

The other two women were also assaulted when they tried to step in and protect their friend.

However, two brave members of the public heard the ruckus and rushed to the scene, keeping a hold of the attacker until police arrived.

And Chief Inspector Gillian Scott has written letters of commendation to the good Samaritans.

She told the News: “Shortly before 1am three women were walking along Stroud Road.

“They were walking home from The Oystercatcher in Lindsayfield.

“They were attacked in what was a completely unprovoked assault.

“The man demanded money from them and thereafter assaulted one of the 24-year-old women resulting in her losing a tooth and suffering facial cuts and bruising.

“Her two friends tried to intervene but were also both assaulted by the man.

“However, two members of the public heard the disturbance and they ran to the females’ assistance and restrained the male until the police arrived.

“All three women were taken to Hairmyres Hospital and one of the 24-year-olds and the 23-year-old treatment for her injuries.”

Police said if it hadn’t been for the brave actions of the members of the public they may not have traced the culprit.

“Both these men on hearing cries for assistance in the early hours of the morning came out of their home to assist and went above and beyond with their actions.

“As Area Commander for the East Kilbride area I would like to offer my sincere thanks to them.

“I believe that there is little doubt that their actions that day prevented the young women from suffering more severe injuries and resulted in the detention of a violent individual.”

A 23-year old was expected t o a ppear i n c our t t hi s week i n connection with the incident.
