Loose chippings headache on newly-resurfaced road
Loose chippings on the recently resurfaced A726 have caused damage to a number of car windscreens with the potential to cause a serious accident.
Furious drivers have complained to South Lanarkshire Council about the flying “missiles”.
The authority have issued a warning to road users about speeding on the newly laid sections.
The section of road leading to Strathaven from East Kilbride, immediately following the Torrance roundabout, and a l arge section of t h e r o a d b e t ween St r a t hav e n a n d Chapelton, have been reduced to a 20mph speed limit following work.
However, wi t h s o me r o a d u s e r s ignoring signs, chippings have been flying around the road and damaging vehicles.
The roadworks also caused tailbacks, with more on the way as a complete shutdown of the road begins next week.
South Lanarkshire Council say that they conducted a sweep of the road following the initial work, and will be conducting a second one in the near future.
Head of roads and transportation, Road rage Gordon MacKay, urged road users to obey the new speed limit.
He told the News: “Surface dressing works have recently been completed on the A726 Strathaven Road and a recommended reduced speed limit is clearly signposted.
“Drivers must adhere to this temporary lower limit for the safety of all road users.
“Surface dressing is a cost effective preventative maintenance process which seals the road surface and delays the need to undertake much more costly resurfacing or reconstruction works.
“It is expected that surface dressing will extend the useful life of the road and al s o re duce t he need f or reactive maintenance over the coming years.
“L oose chippings are nor mal on newly-surfaced dressed roads.
“An initial sweep to remove loose chippings is undertaken approximately t wo d ay s a f t e r t r e a t ment t o a l l ow f or embedment of t he s t one c hi ps before a second sweep is undertaken approximately two weeks later.”
