Wedded bliss.. 22 years after couple first met
Worth the wait as Robert and Wendy tie the knot
Newly weds Rober t and Wendy McGhee may have had to wait more than 20 years for love to blossom but the happy couple say it’s been worth it.
They were married recently in Claremont Parish Church after getting to know each other 22 years ago through mutual friends.
While Wendy, who grew up in St Leonards and works for tech firm Ideagen as a receptionist, and Robert, f rom Westwood, were just friends all these years ago, it was a chance meeting at Hairmyres Hospital in 2014 that saw them on course to wedded bliss.
They were engaged in July of that year and family and friends were del i g ht e d t o t oast t hei r nuptials.
Rober t , who works f o r t he Royal Mail, told the News: “When we were younger we first met through friends.
“A pal of mine worked with Wendy and we got to know each other and used to socialise.
“Back then we were nothing more than friends but we kind of lost touch with our lives taking us on our own paths.”
Rober t went on: “But, as i t happened, a few years ago both our mums weren’t well and were in Hairmyres Hospital.
“I was sitting with my mum and Wendy’s mum was brought into the same ward.
“We just got chatting as you do when you are visiting relatives in hospital and it went from there.
“We went out on a few dates and love blossomed from there.
“It c a n t a k e a l ong t i me t o find the right person and I can Happy couple certainly say I have found my soulmate with Wendy. Neither of us have been married before so we took our time.
“It may have taken us 20-odd years but we got there in the end.”
The couple’s reception was held in the Torrance Hotel and they honeymooned in Las Vegas and New York.
Robert added: “The wedding was a fantastic day and we would like to thank everyone at the Torrance Hotel, and all our fr iends and family for making our big day so special.
“It was definitely worth t he wait!”
