Neigh end to fun at the museum

S o me o f S co t l a n d ’s most f a mous hors e bre e ds a r e set to star in the National M u s e u m o f R u r a l L i f e ’s annual Heavy Horse Show.

Over 100 horses will be on show this Sunday, July 17, ranging from ma g n i f i c e n t C l y d e s d a l e s , t h e giants of the equine world, to tiny Shetland ponies as well as a number of donkeys.

Visitors to the event will be able t o e nj oy a t hr i l l i ng s t unt- r i di ng showcase from Scotland’s equestrian stunt team, Riders of the Storm, and will also have the chance to ride a majestic Clydesdale horse, to meet some alpacas and to enjoy meet and greet sessions with Shetland ponies.

The popular show will see some of the finest examples of the Clydesdale breed compete for top honours in a n u mbe r o f c l a s s e s i n c l u d i n g Turnout ( r i ding with car r i ages), and the Clydesdale Ridden class, and there will be show classes for Shetland ponies and a driving class for donkeys.

Vi s i t or s c a n s e e Anna, one of t wo re s i dent Cl y desdal e s at t he attraction’s historic working farm, compete in a show class, and can visit her older Clydesdale companion Mairi at home on the farm alongside t h e m u s e u m’s p r i z e - w i n n i n g Ayrshire c ows, Aberdeen Angus cattle, Tamworth pigs, sheep and chickens. The family-friendly event also features craft sessions plus rideon tractors for toddlers.

Shirley Maciver, general manager of the museum, said: “The iconic Cl y d e s d a l e b r e e d o r i g i nat e d i n Lanarkshir­e so these magnificen­t creatures look right at home in our museum’s historic country setting, al ongside s ome of t heir s maller equine relatives. The horses are an amazing sight and will all have been groomed to perfection. Our Heavy Horse Show is the perfect opportunit­y to see them in action a nd t o e nj oy t he s p e c t a c l e o f a popular, family-friendly day out.”

The show runs from 10am till 5pm and tickets cost £10 for adults, £9 concession­s, £6 for children (underfives free) with a family ticket priced at £27.
